Don Dunstan Fellows

Don Dunstan was a firm believer in the power of the government to do good. And he practised what he believed in a remarkably effective way. His optimism and confidence that the instruments of government can be used to make for better lives, combined with a deep respect for the value of individuals in all our diversity, is what makes his values so relevant today. We have faltered in our quest to provide better lives for all our citizens, rather than just for the talented, lucky groups.

To regain our confidence in our power to shape the society in which we live, and to replace fear and "just coping" with shared joy, optimism and mutual respect, needs new imagining and thinking and learning from what succeeds elsewhere.

To this end the Foundation has established a program of prestigious Dunstan Fellowships recognising and engaging leading contributors in public debate from around Australia.

The Dunstan Fellows will take an innovative approach in developing and advocating public policy. They will assemble creative minds from all walks of life for sustained thinking on a range of themes relating to creating a fairer Australia for future generations. The Dunstan Foundation will facilitate feedback from interested citizens via public forums and discussions on our website.

The ideas flowing from this engagement will become the basis for highly publicised orations or other public presentations by the Fellows, an agenda for action at the personal, local and national levels, and a follow-up that will make findings available to key policy-makers.

Dunstan Fellows Program 2005: Affordable Housing For Australian Families
