Tribute to the Passing of a 'cultural warrior'.
Dr Doreen Kartinyeri (Aunty Dodo) passed away in the early hours of Monday morning 3 December 2007.

Press Release - Late Dr Doreen Kartinyeri
3.12.07 Hindmarsh Island woman dies

An Aboriginal woman who cited "secret women's business" when trying to stop the Hindmarsh Island Bridge being built has died. Relatives say Doreen Kartinyeri died in hospital early today, aged 72, after battling stomach cancer and other illness. Mrs Kartinyeri was pivotal in the 1994 banning of the Hindmarsh Island bridge at Goolwa, south of Adelaide. The bridge was banned by the federal government after Mrs Kartinyeri, a Ngarrindjeri tribal elder, wrote of Aboriginal women's "secret business" related to the site - business not to be divulged outside women's circles. A 1995 royal commission into the controversy found the claims of secret women's business were fabricated and the bridge, linking SA's mainland to Hindmarsh Island, was built and opened in March 2001.--AAP
